General Information

The Department of Basic Sciences is made up of five units, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Herbarium, Mathematical Sciences and Physics

Physics Unit

The unit introduces students to foundations and principles of physics in preparation for higher-level courses in Agricultural engineering and other related fields of programmes for higher diplomas and degrees.

The unit has competency in environmental physics, with special research interests in aerosols deposition mechanisms studied with 210Pb and 7Be radioisotopes and ensemble trajectory analyses of long–range pollutant transport, dispersion and deposition.

Environmental Physics

The research involves the use of naturally occurring (and anthropogenic) radioisotopes as tracers of atmospheric aerosols (pollutants). The monitoring of 210Pb, 7Be and to a lesser degree, 137Cs in the lower troposphere is of paramount importance. The isotopes of 210Pb and 7Be are continuously being produced in the atmosphere and deposited onto terrestrial surfaces. Knowledge of their concentrations in the atmosphere and deposition fluxes is of importance in determining deposition velocities of most pollutants of concern, since the two do attach to the same accumulation mode as the sulphates and nitrates.
