The Department of Basic Sciences is made up of five units, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Herbarium, Mathematical Sciences and Physics



GEC Courses Synopsis

BSB 255 ECONOMIC BOTANY (2 credits)

Introduction to Economic Botany, Ethno-botany, origin of plant uses, traditional plants that are used for food, medicine and other uses, indigenous plants with economic crop value, plant identification, classification and collection.

BSB 353 HISTORY OF BIOLOGY (3 credits)

The History of Biology over time, starting with the early philosophers and original thought and their influence. The renaissance period which experienced a flurry of scientific activity and discoveries. The beginning of scientific experimentation, which led to the scientific process. The Industrial Age. Modern biology culminating in the elucidation of the structure of the genetic material, DNA.

BSB 354 BIOETHICS (3 credits)

The course is concerned with the study of moral conduct in the area of biology, including those related to agriculture, medicine and research. Focus will be placed on understanding and appreciating relevant biological facts as they confront the principles and practices of ethical decision-making at the level of the individual, the community and the nation.

GEC 121 COMPUTING AND INFORMATION SKILLS FUNDAMENTALS I (2 Credits)

Computing hardware and software systems concepts and principles; Operating system and file management basics; Basic applications of computing using Word processing application packages; Application areas of computers; Essentials of Data communications and network system concepts; Internet and electronic mails basics; Computers and society issues; Fundamental information skills: Information organization; Identifying information need; Locating sources of information; Using electronic resources. Security and legal issues of information; Introduction to problem solving with computers: concepts, principles, methods, tools and techniques: Practical laboratory exercise.
