The Department of Basic Sciences is made up of five units, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Herbarium, Mathematical Sciences and Physics



BS Core Courses

BSB 110 MATHEMATICS 1 (3 credits)

Pre-requisite: GCSE Mathematics
Mathematical expressions; equations; Polynomials; Inequalities; Indices and Logarithms; Functions; Series and Sequences: Mathematical induction; Factorials and binomial expansion; Points; Straight lines; Translation and rotation of axes; Loci; Trigonometry.

BSB 111 GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY (3 credits)

Measurements and units; Composition of matter; Chemical Reactions; Stoichiometry; Atomic structure; Chemical Bonding; Molecular Geometry; Chemistry of selected elements important to Agriculture. Practicals will include- experiments on measurements, purification techniques, chemical reactions, Stoichiometry experiments, and inorganic qualitative analysis.

BSB 112 PHYSICS I (3 credits)

Pre-requisite: GCSE Physics
Basic and derived quantities; Dimensions of physical quantities; Conversion of units; Errors and their calculations; Accuracy; Precision; Standard scientific notion; Order of magnitude; Vector Algebra; Motion in one, two and three dimensions; Newton's laws and their applications; Systems of particles and conservation of momentum; Static equilibrium and elasticity; Work and energy; Fluids; Thermal properties and processes; Ideal gas law; First and second laws of thermodynamics; Oscillations; Waves; Properties of light; Optical images; Interference and diffraction.

BSB 113 BIOLOGY OF CELLS (3 credits)

Introduction to use of microscopy, scientific methods including handling of data. Biochemistry: the structure and role of bio-molecules in living organisms. Cell biology comprises structure and function of plant and animal ultra-structure i.e. plant and animal cell organelles and movements within the cell. Genetics: chromosome theory of inheritance, significance of mitosis and meiosis and Mendelian genetics. 1 | 2 | 3
